The time had come. My bachelor’s degree was newly in hand, and I also decided to accept the job that is first was being offered ( it had been the Great Recession and driving a car of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, working together with senior school seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to become a fit that is great me! I learned many things working at a senior high school (are you aware there’s an app that calculates the likelihood you are going to get yourself a snowfall day?!), and each fall was a concept in just how difficult it really is to be always a 12^th grader.

Senior is tough year! You are in your most difficult classes up to now, you are accepting more and more duties, you’re hitting a milestone virtually every week…and then you are asked by us to college. 12^th grade may never be simple, you can simply make it less hard. Though each student’s college procedure is unique, you will find a small number of behaviors/mind sets that I have observed cause unnecessary anxiety time and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Appocalypse that is common by some I mean me), but they are all avoidable once you learn how to recognize the signs!

 Focusing too much on that which you can’t change.

Can you keep worrying all about that C you’ve got in freshman English? Are you regretting your choice to stop the track team? Many students spend their senior fall focusing on the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery pack. In the place of stressing about things you cannot change, take your time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior year grades, and putting together the application that is best you can. Think upward and onward!

Ignoring the advice of your elders.

Would you nod whenever your counselor speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your memory? Do you reject your parents‘ guidance like it is your task? I am shocked…really, I’m. Keep in mind that, with it,‘ the adults in your life can offer important insight into your application process (and even help you identify your strengths so you can better highlight them) while they might not always be ‚hip and. Ignoring their advice can cut you off from some pretty valuable information, so why not take all of the help you’ll get?

Falling in love.

No, I’m not speaking about the lab partner you’ve had a crush on for years (them already) though you should really just tell! I am referring to the head-over-heels students that are feeling get for one college on their list. There’s a difference between having a first option and being so fixated for a school you can not even fathom going anywhere else. It’s called the faculty process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it will end! Though I sincerely hope you’re admitted to your top choice (and obviously I hope your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to help keep an open mind and discover a number of institutions you’ll love to go to.

Avoidance.

Are you leaving things towards the last minute? Are you putting down finding out about what supplementary essays you need to write? Have you been reading this post on 14th january? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell yourself, no one works most readily useful under stress (trust me…this is a ‚do as I state, never as I do‘ situation). Numerous drafts are the key to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the only real defense against a sloppy application. You have enough in your dish senior year. If you don’t yet have a plan for how you are going to complete most of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! You don’t want to rush (or worse, forget something) in this technique. Student Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo

It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to begin working with our web log. While discovering subject ideas, I looked at common questions we have from potential pupils and another of my favorites is always: exactly what’s it like to be described as a learning pupil at USC? And although I’m an alumna of the university and had personal experiences… that is great actually want you to hear from current pupils with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about all the things that are cool have to say (many of you get enough of that), I’ll find current students to tell you about their experiences. The student Body President for the Undergraduate Student Government for our first installment, we have Edwin Saucedo. He is originally from South Gate, CA and it is set to graduate this coming May 2017. Here is what he had to express:

Four years back, I found myself where many of perhaps you are right now: frustrated with my personal statement and fed up with looking for the college that is perfect. It absolutely was hard sufficient attempting to navigate university applications when neither of my parents talked English or had pursued higher education themselves. The stress of finding the best place to spend the next four years was extremely overwhelming.

As I think right back at my university application process the very first thing i need to say is, everything worked out much better than i really could have ever anticipated. I never thought I would end up at USC when I applied to college. I expanded up in Southern Gate, CA where just 6% regarding the population that is total a college degree. The four years in between my senior year of high college and senior year of college have induced an amount of classes, experiences, and friendships I never expected. However, the combination of most these life that is unexpected has indeed led me to where I am today.

Being pupil Body President at the most prestigious universities in the country is an daunting job. It is not easy trying to represent nearly 19,000 students who originate from over 100 different countries, are of all different races, and have very diverse economic backgrounds. However, it really is also a very rewarding opportunity. Every i get to go into our student government office and ask myself: how can I make this university a better place for all students day? That is our goal in student government, to create the greatest undergraduate experience, which is why I decided to run for this position spring that is last.

I spend at the least twenty hours each week listening to students‘ experiences, asking them how I could be of any service, and connecting them towards the channels that are proper this campus. On one other part of things, I advocate on their behalf to administration in efforts to create better campus policies, address any presssing issues, and plan for future years of our campus. My favorite part however is taking the knowledge I learned from both students and administrators and picking out unique solutions to addressing these issues.

In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and thinkers that are creative. We challenge each other’s ideas and gives suggested statements on improvements. During the end of the we come up with proposals on how to address each and every issue day. It is through these creative proposals that we have been able to get our students free Uber rides from 7pm to 2 am and have gotten a regular farmers market on campus. But our work doesn’t end there. Over the span of the year our student government puts on over 300 free events for our pupils. These range between intimate talks about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or performers like Diplo for all of our students to enjoy.

We shape the experience that is undergraduate give students the chance to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is what college is focused on. Irrespective of whether pay a visit to USC or select elsewhere as your house, dare to challenge your self and become challenged by others. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my very own, they’re not wrong or right but different, and that is okay.

You will end up, but instead what you will do once you get there as you approach the last months of the college application process don’t worry as much about where. College is time and energy to explore and find your passion. I came across my passion within student government and working towards enhancing USC for current and future students. For you, that passion might lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your last months of high school and get ready to embark in a new journey full of unique and exciting experiences.
